He is also Co-Founder and Managing Director of American Infrastructure Funds. Podcasts Available - you missed the October 9th teleconference with Hazel Henderson and Rinaldo Brutoco discussing this "Economic Crunch: What Lies Ahead?" you can listen to the podcast. This first podcast is free to introduce our members and guests to the new teleconference series. Enjoy! Academy President Rinaldo Brutoco has filed a patent application for a Hydrolift, a revolutionary new form of hydrogen powered, lighter-than-air ship that we believe will radically alter the movement of passengers and cargo while it serves as the bridge to the emerging hydrogen economy. The ship will be able to fly at altitudes up to 39,000 feet with a maximum weight lifting capacity of 400,000 pounds and a maximum speed in excess of 350 miles per hour. The Hydrolifter will be a cheap, clean way to deliver hydrogen to fueling stations like those that California and Europe are creating as part of their hydrogen highways. The Hydrolifter will act as a mobile elevator platform that uses almost no energy in carrying hundreds of thousands of gallons of water to virtually any altitude on the planet. This application is particularly vital as it means that the hundreds of millions of people on the planet who now depend on disappearing glacial melt waters for survival will have a way to get water to their villages at a cost less than it would take to put in a conventional water system that would require prohibitive uphill-pumping of fresh water. Airline companies that must rely on expensive jet fuel are not sustainable and their emissions are a major contributor to climate change. A report prepared by the U.S. Department of Transportation and others concluded that airlines’ CO2 emissions are 20% higher than thought, and could reach 1.5 billion tons a year by 2025, exceeding the UN Climate Change Panel’s worse case scenarios. Academy Fellow Deepak Chopra hosts Academy President Rinaldo Brutoco each week on his national radio broadcast on Sirius radio. Tune in during the second half of each show to learn the Academy's thoughts on the economic crunch, the role of business in today's changing environment and the new paradigm of business that is rapidly emerging. Academy Member James A. Cusumano, Ph.D., a resident of Prague, has written an article on the problems with nuclear power for Prague Leaders Magazine. His article is the fourth part of the Prague Leaders Magazine series on energy and climate change. Jim was Director of Catalytic Research and Development at ExxonMobil, where he and his team worked on fundamental and applied research projects in petroleum and petrochemical processing, fuel cells, synthetic fuels, and emissions control. Jim subsequently founded Catalytica. This graphical tour of what may be mankind's greatest challenge is essential reading. On October 1, 2008, at the Green Media Show™ the Academy presented its 2008 EthicMark® Award for "advertising that uplifts the human spirit and society" to the Alliance for Climate Protection and the Martin Agency for their "Unlikely Alliances" campaign. The Alliance for Climate Protection is a nonprofit, nonpartisan effort founded by Nobel Laureate and former Vice President Al Gore. The goal of the Alliance is to build a movement that creates the political will to solve the climate crisis by persuading people of the urgency and feasibility of adopting and implementing comprehensive solutions for the climate crisis. "Building public support for a complex issue like solving climate change is a challenging task," said Cathy Zoi, CEO of the Alliance. "The team at The Martin Agency helped create a memorable and iconic image with the "Unlikely Alliances" campaign and conveyed a strong message that it will take Americans of all political stripes to tackle the climate crisis." Academy President Rinaldo Brutoco called the winning campaign "a new benchmark for the role of advertising in highlighting creative options for our global future." Hazel Henderson, founder of the Award, added, "This 'Unlikely Alliances' campaign was selected from entries from all over the world and points the way for advertising to achieve its true potential as an agent for creating positive futures for the human family." The 2008 EthicMark® Award was presented by its founder, global futurist Hazel Henderson, co-chair with Rinaldo Brutoco of the World Business Academy's EthicMark® Advisory Board, and by Tim O'Connor, President of the Pythagoras Group, and Martha Shaw, President of Earth Advertising, both also members of the EthicMark® Advisory Board. Matt Williams, Senior Vice President and partner of The Martin Agency, accepted the Award on behalf of the Alliance for Climate Protection and The Martin Agency. "The Martin Agency and the Alliance for Climate Protection are honored to receive the 2008 EthicMark® Award," said Williams. "It's a privilege for us to be involved with the Alliance's 'WE' campaign, and to use our creativity to mobilize people all over America to meet the challenge of solving the climate crisis" (shown above with Martha Shaw). In 2004, Dr. Hazel Henderson founded the EthicMark® Award and the not-for-profit EthicMark® Institute. She is the author of Ethical Markets: Growing the Green Economy, winner of the Bronze Award of the 2008 Axiom Business Books Awards. She is also the Founder and Producer of Ethical Markets Media, LLC and the creator and Executive Producer of the Ethical Markets television series. Academy President Rinaldo Brutoco spoke to the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina on "Lemons to Lemonade: How to Launch a Sustainable Business in 24-36 Months." His talk was hosted by the School's Center for Sustainable Enterprise. In a September 2007 ranking of business schools, the Wall St. Journal ranked Kenan-Flagler #5 nationally for corporate social responsibility. View a clip of his speech here. If you would like to order a copy of the entire speech, please visit our online store and we will send you a complimentary copy. Academy President Rinaldo Brutoco was the first guest speaker in the new Fairmount Minerals Colloquium Series at the Weatherhead School of Management's Center for Business as an Agent of World Benefit. Rinaldo's speech, "Three Choices for Wisdom," addressed the global energy/climate crisis and what to do about it. It was the first in the new colloquium series funded by Fairmount Minerals, a leader in social responsibility and triple-bottom line business practices. Fairmont's motto is "Do good, do well." Rinaldo's presentation was arranged with the assistance of Academy Member Ante Glavas and Fellow David Cooperrider. Nuclear power is not the answer to our energy needs or the climate change crisis, as Rinaldo Brutoco and Madeleine Austin, the Academy’s President and Vice President, explain in “The nuclear nemesis,” published by the American Bar Association in the May/June issue 2008 of Trends. The authors explain, “Building new nuclear plants to try to reduce carbon emission would irrevocably commit the world to a plutonium economy, increasing the risk of nuclear proliferation and terrorism, cancer, and contamination from nuclear waste.” New nuclear capacity cannot be added fast enough to significantly cut global carbon emissions.” The authors also explain how the industry’s need for vast amounts of cooling water makes it particularly ill-suited to the climate change era. In a March 5, 2008 ABA teleconference, “Nuclear Power Finance and Development in the Climate Change Era,” Rinaldo elaborated on these points and explained why nuclear power doesn’t make economic sense and won’t deliver reasonably priced energy, as Warren Buffet’s company, MidAmerican, recently concluded. “I recommend that anyone interested in knowing the real facts about the history of oil, what is happening in the oil industry today, and in particular the Middle East’s involvement should read Freedom from Mid-East Oil. The book is so well written it should become a mandatory text book for high schools and colleges.” C. Paul Davis Imagine a world in which America won its freedom from Mideast oil. We can build that world within 10 years with existing technology and no new taxes. Imagine a world in which America resolved to overcome the energy-climate change crisis that threatens its national security. We can build that world today with informed choices and political will. Imagine a book with a roadmap for ending America’s dangerous dependence on imported oil and the global warming that is threatening the planet. This is that book. Read more or listen to co-author Rinaldo Brutoco speak about the book.
